TRAUMA

A particular area of focus in my practice is helping people heal from trauma. Trauma can be caused by something that happened once or something that occurred over a period of time, it can be caused by one person or a number of people, or by something that happens in family or social systems. It can be something that happened to you or something you saw happen. In all theses cases and others, trauma is rooted in the pain caused by violations of boundaries, by hostile, destructive and violent forces. The pain overwhelms our emotional system. It challenges our deepest sense of who we are and what is real. It leaves us struggling to feel connected to ourselves, to others, and to a lasting sense of hope for living a more relaxed and joyful life. We feel held back by the past, frightened by the future, and lost at sea in the present.

The process of healing trauma starts with building some relaxation skills to start working with how we feel in our body, and then moves into noticing and challenging what is happening in our minds. Through a process of gently connecting past and present, of softening our bodies to work with our feelings and thoughts, we gain enough distance and confidence to move forward into what we most deeply want for ourselves, for our relationships, and for the life ahead of us. We see the strengths that helped us survive can also help us thrive. Essential to this process of healing is that it feels to you like it is being done in a safe enough setting, at a safe enough pace, and in a safe enough relationship. I hope that you will reach out to see if I am someone who can support you in this life changing work.
